USAP  > Urban Solar Audio Plant

Richard Buckminster Fuller > Credo: Do more with less

URBAN SOLAR AUDIO PLANT (USAP) is a solar-cell powered, wireless LAN controlled, multichannel sound-installation for public space. A swarm of mobile loudspeaker columns turns every suitable outdoor area into a spacious and unique “listening park”.
By the large-area spreading of the single sound sources and the 12- channel compositions and soundscapes which had been specially created for USAP, this novel instrument gives the visitor an extraordinary listening experience at special urban places or at rural areas.
USAP is controlled by a specially developed internal WLAN system. Thereby, it provides
on-site access to every single sound sound column.
On location, our software guarantees the synchronisation of any number of “clients´´ or channels.  A unique feature is the energy supply. The installation powers itself with solar energy and thus, is self-sufficient.
In case of connecting USAP to the internet, the installation would also be
assessable worldwide. USAP is a mobile installation. It is designed for temporary
performances at most different places. The innovative USAP software is the result of a research and development project in cooperation with HRW Hochschule Ruhr West – University of Applied Sciences and was, amongst others, funded by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research, NRW.
Currently, the USAP team develops further (mobile) multichannel performance applications
in connection to other segments of the performing arts (musical theatre/ dance theatre).
URBAN SOLAR AUDIO PLANT (USAP)
was designed, developed and realised by
Michael Dawid, Peter Eisold and Kulturwerk e.V.
The first public presentation of the USAP Version 1.0 took place at the areaway of the
DORTMUNDER U within the framework of U-TOPIA • FESTIVAL FÜR MUSIK KUNST
UND TECHNOLOGIE.
